i know this has been read to death and there are several theories regarding this problem but i cant seem to find any relating to the same symptoms but intermitently. Same symptons, ie low power, as if someones turned the turbo off!! then stop the car, restart and its ok again til a few miles down the road. MAF has been replaced with a genuine ford part. The car is now sold but the new owner is experiencing problems and i wanna help the guy cos hes a nice chap and dont need to inherit somebody elses problem

Hi

Had the same problem and found it was the vacume pipe which had come off, the one next to the pressure sensor on the air ducting leading from the inlet to the intercooler. Could be worth checking.

As the buyer of the car I'd first of all like to say a big thanks to platinum for his help with this.

The car has done 3 trips of 8 - 18 miles today and been fine. Do the collective think that the fact it had been standing a while might make the problem surface due to some transient condition, like an accumulation of gunk on the wire in the MAF, and that a long run like I did last night (115 miles) might clear it so it's now OK?

Or is this one of those annoying intermittent things?

Cheers

Hope this helps...

I have had MAF problems but mine wasn't intermittent. What I discovered was that some ham fisted oik had tried to push the MAF connector back in to the sensor and failed, so used a tie wrap to hold it in place. When I removed the tie-wrap and gently persuaded the connector back in, the engine performed superbly.

The point is that the connector had been damaged and the first test drive produced exactly the same symptoms as you describe. Some of the connector contacts had ridden over the sensor tongues, giving a gravity connection instead of a firm spring connection. By removing the connector and being very careful to ensure that the tongues of the sensor engaged into the centre of the connector's springs, a complete repair has been effected.

Costs nothing to check this one....

John
